Course Title: A Five Week NGO management Certificate Course 2006

Background:

SEARCH is a major development training initiative in India working with NGO sector for the last 30 years beginning with providing professionals for development sector and now involved in NGO management capacity building.

 SEARCH has successfully completed 11 years of NGO management training modules for more then 150 NGOs and support organizations in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Its management training segments have been used by major donor agencies of Europe and their counter parts in development sector in Asia (e.g. Christian aid, BFW, ICCO, EEZ, CARITAS, etc.) SEARCH also carried out an impact study of the NGO management training sometime back, which indicated the continuing need for management support training programs for the Asian NGOs. In view of this finding and the continued requests for accommodation in the NGO management-training program, SEARCH plans to conduct this training program in the year 2006.

 

GOAL

.      Enhancing the management capability of the senior and middle management teams and leaders of NGOs and thereby improve the project outcomes and impact and optimize resource utilization in development process

Objectives

.     Enhancing the organizational process understanding, its structures, functions, team effectiveness, HR management, institution development and NGO network operations.

.     Providing frameworks for analysis and interpretation of project area, problems and factors that influence the project outcomes.

.     Improving the project planning, monitoring and evaluation systems in order to increase the impact of programs of development in NGO operational area.

.     Offering specialization competence for organizations in thematic areas of micro finance, HIV/AIDS prevention and community development.

.     Improving the management skills of the project managers in the sphere of management information systems, use of information technology, communication and leadership.

.     Providing guidance for application of strategic management principles and tools for effective project negotiations and leadership.

.     Providing practical exposure to development project management for increasing the project effectiveness in NGOs.

Module1

Organizational process, structure, roles and functions: 30 hours

Objectives:

  1. To provide experiential learning opportunity to understand and internalize the organizational processes and dynamics.
  2. To evolve and use the simple management tools to optimize the team functioning and leadership functions in organization context.

Methodology:

  1. Input sessions, group work sessions and exercises.
  2. Unstructured sessions with process techniques of supportive and confrontative facilitation are used in the sessions.
  3. Individual and team goals are set and challenges are provided to achieve the goals thereby emphasizing on motivation profiles of members in teams.
  4. Presentations and discussion opportunities to clarify and learn from dialogue on experiences in organizational management.

.     Role analysis and role enrichment lab: 30 hours

Objectives:

  1. To provide the participants tools to analyze the roles in organization and project and thereby fine-tune project performance.
  2. To facilitate evolving tools and frameworks to understand and analyze the various project roles and equip them in optimizing the outputs.
  3. To equip the participants with knowledge and skills in analyzing and managing the role conflicts and role related problems in projects.

Methodology:

  1. Exercises and assignments would be used in analyzing the roles in practical organizational context. These experiences are later consolidated as learning for management of organization and project teams.
  2. Feedback and facilitation in individual and team learning contexts.
  3. Review and reflection tools for enrichment of roles of management teams.

Field exposure on theme based project management: 50 hours.

Practical skills in project management are facilitated through field visit and exposure during the management training in related themes. SEARCH projects on Micro finance and HIV/AIDS prevention are selected for exposure and expert teams in those projects are involved in interactions on management practices. MYRADA project on community development is selected for the other theme. It has an established management team and systems that can enlighten project management students.

Objectives:

  1. To facilitate project management learning by practical interactions with the theme based projects: Micro finance project, HIV/AIDS prevention Project, and Community development project.
  2. Learn and upgrade management skills in different project contexts by experiencing systems in project management.

Methodology:

  1. The participants' group would visit the project along with a facilitator and study the project management in practice.
  2. The study would include assignments, reviews and presentations.
  3. Each participant would get an opportunity to carry out case studies during the field exposure.

Module 5

Organization development and strategic management: 50 hours

Objectives:

  1. Enhance the understanding of institution development process and facilitate skills in using institution development tools.
  2. Estimate the levels of team synergy and apply practical tools to increase the team functioning and thereby increase institutional productivity.
  3. Increase the knowledge of network functioning and gain additional skills in institutional networking.

Methodology:

  1. Simulations and exercises are used to motivate members to learn the institutional context of development.
  2. Assignments and feedback process are used in the learning sessions to fit the outcomes with the needs of the members.
  3. Individual and team participation are monitored and appropriate facilitation is provided for enhancing learning potentials.

Yoga for stress management by international institute of Yoga: 15 hours.

Yoga for stress management is an optional specialization available for participants during the program. An international institution, which is a recognized, deemed university is involved in teaching yoga for stress management. Its team provides their resource at appropriate stage in the management training.

Objectives:

  1. Create and increase awareness of psychosocial factors that cause or enhance stress situations in organization and learn to effectively manage them.
  2. Learn and adopt yoga exercises for increased ability in handling conflicts, tensions and stress arising out of organizational and management roles.
  3. Increasing abilities of time management, cooperation potential and bridging communication systems in organization context.

Expected outcomes:

  1. Enhanced work satisfaction in organization.

IT education for project management: 50 hours.

Computer application for development management is a specific sphere of management capacity development in this course. Individuals are assigned computers during the whole program and a competent team of IT professionals would be available for guiding the participants in using IT tools for development project management. Software tools available for project management are used for orientation of the participants. Participants would have access to Internet and email during the course to access management material and interact with others on management themes.

HR SYSTEMS IN MANAGEMENT: 40 Hours

  2. Improve the process of recruitment, induction and training of the project and organization personnel and thereby increase the project impact.
  3. Increase the participants' skills in management of staff by enhancing the motivation potential within organization.

Training process and methodology:

This training will be residential in nature and a team of management facilitators of SEARCH would conduct this training. Additional resources and consultants are drawn from various reputed institutions of India including management experts in NGO and development organizations.

 

The program is envisaged to use participatory training tools in order to make the content and skills relevant to the participant teams. Simulations, group work, workshops and assignments are used as part of the training. Case material are prepared and used to enhance the internalization potential.

SEARCH Library equipped with NGO and project and organization management books, manuals and material is kept open constantly for participants' reference.

Audiovisual equipments including VCD players, OHP, LCD projector, etc. are available in the center for use in presentations and learning practices. SEARCH publications on the Project and NGO management themes are available both print version and the digital versions for reference of the participants. These facilitate higher learning opportunities for the group members.

COURSE FEES:

Rupees 45,000 are charged per participant for the course, which is inclusive of board and lodge, material, computers and tuition costs. The break up is as follows:
